Robert E. Wells
About the Author
Bob Wells is emeritus professor of physical education at Frostburg State University in Maryland, where he taught for 30 years.
An alumnus of the University of Rhode Island, he earned his graduate degrees at Fitchburg State College and Indiana University.
Additional work at the University of Maryland in the areas of sport history and sociology led to a 25-year study of African American athletes, the development of undergraduate/ graduate coursework in the subject at Frostburg State and research which culminated in this book. A highly-successful baseball coach at Frostburg, his childhood admiration of Jackie Robinson was the probable genesis of his interest in African American athletics. He is a member of the athletic Hall of Fame at URI and at FSU, where baseball games are played on Bob Wells Field. Now retired, he makes his home in his native Rhode Island, near the campus of his almamater. His summers are spent hiking the mountains of northern New England and New York.

About the Author
Robert Moore III is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Frostburg State University in Maryland. He is a past recipient of
faculty achievement awards for teaching and service and was recently nominated for a State of Maryland Higher Education Regents' Teaching
Award. He is a past president of the Pennsylvania Sociological Society and former chair of the Committee for Race and Ethnic Minorities,
Southern Sociological Society. Professor Moore has edited several books including: African Americans and Whites: Changing Relationships on
College Campuses; The Quality and Quantity of Contact: African Americans and Whites on College Campuses; and The Hidden America: Social
Problems in Rural America for the Twenty-first Century.
Thomas MappesAbout the Author
Thomas A. Mappes holds a B.S. in chemistry from the University of Dayton and a Ph.D. in philosophy from Georgetown University. He is
Professor of Philosophy at Frostburg State University where he has taught since 1973. He is the coeditor (with Jane S. Zembaty) of "Social
Ethics: Morality and Social Policy" (McGraw-Hill, 7/e, 2007), and coeditor (with David DeGrazia) of "Biomedical Ethics" (McGraw-Hill, 6/e, 2006.
His published works appears in journals such as American Philosophical Quarterly and Kennedy Institute of Ethics Journal. Jame S. Zembaty is
Professor Emerita of Philosophy at the University of Dayton and David DeGrazia is Professor of Philosophy at George Washington University.
Dr. Ellen GrolmanAbout the Author
Ellen Grolman joined the music faculty of Frostburg State University, Frostburg, Maryland, in 1983.
Prior to relocating to Maryland, she held a faculty appointment at the Eilat Conservatory of Music in Israel.
She is active in musicological research, specifically in the field of women composers. She is the author of bio-bibliographies of American
composers Joan Tower and Emma Lou Diemer (Greenwood Press 2001 and Scarecrow Press 2007, respectively), editor of a two-volume set of six
string trios by 18th-century composer Maddalena Lombardini-Sirmen (1997) and author of A Catalogue of Published Works for String Orchestra
and Piano Trio by 20th century American Women Composers (1993).
Evan OffsteinAbout the Author
Evan H. Offstein is Assistant Professor in the Department of Management at Frostburg State University. A
graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and a former military intelligence officer, he also served as an Instructor
in the Department of Management, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He is certified as a Senior Professional in Human
Resources (SPHR). He has published articles on leadership, management, and corporate competitiveness in such journals as Business
Communication Quarterly, the Journal of Managerial Psychology, the Journal of Engineering and Technology Management and Human Resource
Management Review.

composition to beginning writers at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, an open-admissions university. A. Franklin Parks is now
Professor of English at Frostburg State University, where he teaches composition, professional writing, and literature. James A. Levernier
is Professor of English at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, where he teaches American literature and American studies. Until her
retirement, Ida Masters Hollowell was Professor of English at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
Daniel PlucinskiAbout the Author
Daniel Plucinski is a tenured Professor of Business Law at Frostburg State University in Maryland. He is also a
Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Management Accountant. He has a BA in philosophy and an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh
and obtained a J.D. from the University of Baltimore. Professor Plucinski enjoys cross-country and downhill skiing and bicycling.

Barbara HurdAbout the Author
Barbara Hurd teaches at Frostburg State University and in the Stonecoast Program in Creative Writing. She is an
editor of the literary annual Nightsun. Her essays and poems have appeared in numerous publications, including the 1999 and 2001 volumes of
The Best American Essays, the Yale Review, the Georgia Review, Audubon, and Sierra.
Amit J. ShahAbout the Author
Amit Shah is a full professor of management and director of the Center for Communtiy Partnerships at Frostburg State University (FSU) in Maryland.
He has over 20 years of experience in industry and acdemia. Dr Shah has taught a variety of business courses including management,
strategic management, and international business. He has published over 60 refereed articles in various journals and published proceedings and has conducted training for various
organizations in the area of business and strategy. In his capacity as a Center director; he works with various small-to-medium-size organizations-for frofit, nonprofit, and government agencies-
in organizing management developement workshops and training. He has received several awards such as Frostburg State University's Outstanding Faculty Service Award, the FSU College of Business's Outstanding
Faculty Research Award, and Outstanding SAM Student Chapter Advisor Award. He has also served as president of the Southeastern Chapters of the Decision Sciences Institute and president of the Institute
for Operations Research and Managament Sciences. When he is not in his classroom or engaged in community service, Dr. Shah enjoys being an entrepreneur serving coffee at Mountain City Coffeehouse and Creamery,
which he owns with his wife.
Stephen W. TwingAbout the Author
Stephen Twing received his B.A. in government and Philosophy from Wofford College in 1986. He received his M.A. (1990) and his Ph.D. (1995) in International Studies
from the University of South Carolina with a concentration in national security policy. He was a Visiting Assistant Professor at Virginia Tech from 1996 to 1998. He is currently Professor and Chair of the
Department of Political Science at Frostburg State University. He has taught online graduate courses in terrorism and national security studies for Norwich University and Virginia Tech. His current research
is focused on the influence of bureaucratic structure on strategic decision-making in the Bush White House in the run-up to the Iraq War.
Martha MattareAbout the Author
Marty Mattare, Assistant Professor in the Department of Management, and Wendy Muldawer are two mothers who live in the Washington, DC area.
They have raised vegetarian children and grand-children with their time-tested, timesaving recipes.
